Tim Hortons Gluten Free Options

Figuring out the gluten free menu at Tim Hortons is not easy. You can go to their website and look up each item and see what allergens there are; however, it will not show you individual items: ie – breakfast sandwich states it contains gluten because of the bread, but it does not state whether or not the cheese, egg, bacon or sausage contain gluten.

There is also confusion because Canada and the US share some of the same menu items. An item may be gluten free in Canada but not in the US, vice versa. I did go to the Canadian Tim Hortons website and look up each and every menu item to see which ones had allergen warnings for gluten before I wrote this. Yes, I am tired:)

Chili – In Canada the website states, it does not have ingredients that contain gluten. In the US, it states the chili may contain gluten because they are unsure if the worcestershire sauce they use contains gluten. It makes me wonder if chili in Canada has worcestershire sauce too and they just haven’t declared its contents. Also, there is no guarantee that the pot they use to make their chili, wasn’t used on another day to make their soup. I do eat Tim Hortons Chili (Canada). I am aware that I may be getting small amounts of gluten from cross-contamination, but I continue to take that risk on occasion.

If you are looking for beverages, they have plenty of beverages that do not contain gluten in the ingredients, but they are not certified gluten free. If you are celiac or sensitive to gluten, you may also have a sensitivity to dairy. In Canada (participating locations) they now offer soy or almond milk. I had an Ice Capp made with almond milk the other day and it was delicious.

Here is a list of beverages at Canadian Tim Hortons that do not contain gluten in the ingredients: Coffee, Latte, Cappuccino, Hot Chocolate, White Hot Chocolate, Tea(s) and Tea Latte, Ice Cappuccino, Real Fruit Chill, Fruit Smoothies, Frozen Lemonade, Chocolate, and White Milk. They now offer Coca-Cola beverages, all of their pops are free of gluten.

List of Tim Hortons food items (Canada) without gluten ingredients: Chili, Hearty Potato Bacon Soup, Baked Beans (Quebec Only), and Hash Browns. Once again, they may use the same pot for soups that contain gluten! It does not state if they cook their hash browns separate from where they cook their breaded chicken. You will have to ask them.

If you live in the US, finding gluten free options is not as difficult because there is a US gluten free menu link, you can click here.
